FAS Genuine Mahogany

Planed Genuine Mahogany
Emerald Doors
starts
with FAS rough sawn lumber (best grade of lumber with
largest amount of clear wood) and planed it to a rough
thickness, then the wood is allowed time to acclimate to
it's new thickness (stresses are removed from the wood
once it is planed) prior to surfacing to exact
thickness. The extra time for the acclimation
makes a very straight and strong
piece of wood. An extra step
Emerald Doors does to make sure you
have the highest quality door and
entry.
Each
piece of wood is hand selected from
their wood stock for quality and
visually inspected for the grain
allowing them to choose the best
pieces to show off the beauty of the
wood for your new entry.
All
thickness measurements are taken with digital calipers
to 1/1,000 of an inch with a specification to within +/-
.005 (5/1,000 of and inch). These standards are
considered extremely high for wood
manufacturers.
Even
Emerald Doors' door trims, brickmolding and interior
casings are made using FAS wood. This allows for
the best match and quality in each
trim that is used in their doors.
A
beautiful door begins with quality
wood that will endure time and the
elements. Emerald Doors
expects their doors to remain
beautiful for years to come.

Low Quality Woods

Engineered Door Rail
Engineered
stiles and rails for doors are many times made of finger
joint pine and alder. Some imported doors do not even
bother to finger joint the interior lower quality woods
and simply butt end blocks of wood creating large voids
of unstable material. Face skins of different mahogany
woods are then applied to exposed areas. If
a door is cut for the door knob you can sometimes see if
lower quality blocks of wood were used by close
inspection of the wood.

Philippine Mahogany
Philippine
mahogany is not true mahogany. It is actually luaun. The
material comes from a family of plants, not mahogany
trees. Philippine mahogany sells for 50-65% lower than
genuine mahogany. Light blond to light red in
color.

African Mahogany
African
mahogany has a variation of color, often appearing as a
series of light and dark bands — a ribbon figure. The
African species occasionally has interlocked grain,
making it more difficult to work with than genuine
mahogany.
Genuine mahogany costs 25-35% percent more than
African mahogany.
Wood
connoisseurs regard genuine mahogany as superior in
working, finishing, and other technical properties,
while the wood of the African species tends to be more
prominently ribbon-figured. It is not uncommon to see
fine furniture in which the exposed structural parts are
of genuine mahogany and the veneers are African
mahogany.

Some companies have "stain seeping trims"?
If the trim allows stain to seep behind
